Jaime Harrison, the outgoing chairman of the Democratic National Committee, is proving that the Democrats have learned absolutely nothing over the last month.
Harrison thinks that far left identity politics should remain central to the Democrat party’s message.
Millions of Americans rejected that vision of America in the 2024 election, but Harrison wants them to double down. That’s fine. They’ll just keep losing elections, which is also fine.
Breitbart News reports:
Outgoing DNC Chair Says ‘Identity Politics’ Should Remain Central Message After Landslide Loss
Outgoing Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair Jaime Harrison believes “identity politics” should remain the Democrat party’s core messaging theme moving forward.
Harrison’s suggestion comes as the party is grappling with why President-elect Donald Trump won reelection in a landslide. Democrats have floated many theories. Some of the theories are here, such as suggesting black and Hispanic voters voted for Trump because they are misogynist.
Identity politics is the tendency to view the individual as only a part of a monolithic group within the primary boundaries of race and sex. This perception ignores an individual’s preferences, decisions, and agency. In short, identity politics produces victimhood.
During the 2024 cycle, for example, the Democrat party widely pandered to black men. The Harris campaign offered the specific demographic loan guarantees that were not specifically slated for white women.
Even the liberals at The Hill know this is a losing proposition:
Democrats’ hard 2024 lesson: Demographic change and identity politics aren’t enough
Looking backward is, of course, a natural response to any catastrophic event. But the problems that emerged for Democrats in the 2024 election are more than short-term or temporary events. If unaddressed, they are likely to plague the Democratic Party for years to come.
Simply put, the party has alienated significant segments of its base. Led by white progressives, the party has moved sharply to the left, while many people of color have not.
As CNN reports, “Latino voters, and men in particular, have been moving toward Donald Trump since 2016. This year, Latino men broke in his direction for the first time. Biden won their support by 23 points in 2020 and Trump won them in 2024. Latina women still favored Harris, but by smaller margins than they supported either Clinton or Biden.”
Moreover, fewer Black men supported Harris than either Biden in 2020 or Hilary Clinton in 2016. Harris outperformed Biden by 3 points among Black women but received 6 points less support than Clinton had when she ran for president.
Ideas like ‘White Dudes for Harris’ got ridiculed and rejected by American voters for a reason. Democrats need to learn this lesson, but Jaime Harrison is proof that they might not ever figure it out.
