As President Trump is set to meet with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz today in the Oval Office, Alternative for Germany (AfD) Bundestag vice-chair Beatrix von Storch gave a speech hailing the rise of MAGA and the conservative, Christian “New West”: “Thank God Donald Trump became President of the United States, and not Kamala Harris, or the Deep State behind Biden’s auto-pen.”
Today is the inaugural visit: Friedrich Merz meets Donald Trump. The press reports that he is intensively preparing:
• to prevent a scandal like Zelensky’s in Washington,
• to convince Trump of a tough stance against Russia—and…
• to appease the US President through a military buildup in Germany.
Our hope is that something different will emerge. and: that Ukraine’s interests are not the priority, but German ones…
…and not “European” ones either—they are not identical to ours. We are an export and industrial country. This does not apply to all EU countries.
So what are our interests in relation to the US?
1. Elimination of all industrial tariffs- But this will only happen if other trade barriers are also removed: Ideological climate and environmental regulations and the enforcement of EU censorship policies are massive obstacles to an agreement.
2. The Energy Issue
• An agreement between the US and Russia on Nord Stream could offer Germany a way out of its energy disaster.
• We can also talk about cooperation between German and US companies in the re-entry into German nuclear power.
Thank God Donald Trump became President of the United States. And not Kamala Harris. Or the Deep State behind Biden’s auto-pen.
Trump offers the opportunity to put the transatlantic partnership on a new foundation. We need a transatlantic partnership, but a NEW one. It’s about developing a new common agenda:
• A new balance of power. The balance between the US and Russia would offer not only the chance for peace in Ukraine – but also in many other regions of the world, if they can finally overcome the logic of the Cold War.
• An end to uncontrolled mass migration and the protection of national borders.
Instead of a military alliance against Russia, we need a global protective alliance against smugglers and illegal migration.
• Freedom of speech
Together with the Trump administration, we can ensure that freedom of expression triumphs and realize an internet without censorship.
• The protection of our cultural heritage.
America is a branch of the European tree. Together we can/must work to preserve our Christian tradition and our national roots.
• We can resolve the trade dispute, eliminate trade imbalances, achieve a stable financial system, in which the real economy once again sets the tone – industry,
agriculture, the middle class, and not the pyramid scheme of debt and inflation.
• Together we can restore sovereignty to the world’s nation-states.
Against the arrogance of power of global undemocratic organizations and agreements such as the Paris Climate Agreement or the WHO Pandemic Agreement.
Where do we stand in the transatlantic relationship?
There was the old West: Atlantic Charter, Truman Doctrine, Airlift, Cold War, Armament.
Many well-meaning conservatives still believe they live in this world and view the Ukraine war through this lens.
But this world has perished, and it will not be resurrected, no matter how much Mr. Merz and some gray-haired fellows of the Adenauer Foundation may wish it to.
It was destroyed and replaced by the woke West: the Rainbow flag, and LGBTQ ideology. Climate religion. Cultural self-hatred, open borders.
Obama, Merkel, Baerbock, Biden; Kamala Harris and Trudeau.
What we are now seeing emerging, with the Make America Great Again movement and the libertarian patriotic movements in Europe, that is the new West.
The new West stands for the political and economic self-assertion of nation states and the renewal of Christian Western culture.
And you, dear colleagues from the Christian Democrats, must decide whether you want to belong to the woke or the new West.
Merz will have to show his colors in Washington or sit between two stools. That is what this visit is about.
We see ourselves as part of the great renewal movement in Western countries that want to overcome wokeness so that we can proudly say:
We are the new West.
We can build a new bridge across the Atlantic on the common foundation of freedom, nation, and Christianity.
This is the West we mean.
