ACAPULCO: It’s all fun and games, until the giant waves crash.
A tropical paradise beach turned into a most dangerous spot by the belated effects of a Hurricane.
Drone footage captured the frightening scene unfolding along Mexico’s Acapulco beach last Sunday (June 1), as swimmers were swamped by a huge wave in the wake of Tropical Storm Alvin.
New York Post reported:
“The nearly 2 1/2-minute video shows walls of angry surf crashing onto the sandy shoreline of Icacos Beach, giving three swimmers quite the ride as they bobbed up and down – and sometimes disappeared beneath – the swells.
At about the 1:13 mark, the trio are pushed under as a massive swell comes ashore, with surf covering the entire sandy beach.
‘A group of people swam despite warnings and were swept up by the swell’, Adolfo Kahan Farco, who recorded the video, told Storyful.”
There is no official statement on the fate of the swimmers, but Farco said that it appeared like they escaped unharmed.
Tropical Storm Alvin was the first storm of the eastern Pacific Ocean hurricane season, and produced giant swells off the coast of southwest Mexico and wind speeds of 60 mph.

On Saturday (May 31), Alvin dissipated into a post-tropical cyclone.
Semana reported (translated from the Spanish):
“But the National Weather Service had warned that the swells generated by Alvin would continue to create potentially dangerous waves and rip currents along the coasts of west-central Mexico and southern Baja California over the weekend.
[…] Alvin generated waves of up to 5 meters on the coasts of Jalisco, Colima and Michoacán, and up to 4 meters in Nayarit. These conditions led to dangerous rip currents and affected tourism and maritime activities in the region.”
