California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has presided over skyrocketing homelessness, rampant crime, and a mass exodus from the state, has finally admitted that he is considering running for president in 2028.
In an interview with CBS News’ Sunday Morning, Newsom confirmed he will give “serious thought” to a White House bid after the 2026 midterm elections.
When asked if he is considering a run after the midterms, Newsom said, “Yeah, I’d be lying otherwise.”
“I’d just be lying. And I’m not — I can’t do that,” the governor continued.
Asked if he is “moving closer to working out a reason for a national candidacy,” Newsom said, “Fate will determine that.”

Newsom’s term as governor ends in January 2027 due to term limits, freeing him to run for the highest office.
The announcement comes as Newsom ramps up his national profile, making trips to battleground states like South Carolina in July 2024 to rally Democrats, a state that may be hosting the first Democrat primary for the presidential election.
CBS reports:
Newsom said talk of him possibly running for president, after facing challenges throughout his life, including dyslexia, is a reminder to him that lives can go in surprising directions.”
“I have no idea,” Newsom said of whether he will decide to run. “The idea that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, that still struggles to read scripts, that was always in the back of the classroom, the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, extraordinary. Who the hell knows? I’m looking forward to who presents themselves in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that’s the question for the American people.”
For now, Newsom claims his focus is on Proposition 50, a controversial California ballot measure set for a special election on November 4 that would allow Democrats to redraw U.S. House districts to their advantage.
“I think it’s about our democracy. It’s about the future of this republic. I think it’s about, you know, what the Founding Fathers lived and died for, this notion of the rule of law, and not the rule of Don,” Newsom said.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris is also hinting at a 2028 run, according to a report from Axios, setting up a potential clown show of a primary.
