New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani affirmed on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he continues to believe President Donald Trump is a “fascist” and a threat to democracy, despite a recent cordial White House meeting between the two.
Mamdani told moderator Kristen Welker, “That’s something I’ve said in the past. I say it today,” standing by his previous sharp criticisms of Trump. He emphasized that his top priority remains addressing the affordability crisis facing New Yorkers, noting that dialogue with Trump centered around these issues, rather than political disagreements.
Mamdani’s relationship with the Trump administration has been contentious, with Trump previously labeling Mamdani a “communist lunatic” and threatening to withdraw federal funding from New York City if voters elected him mayor. Nonetheless, both parties have acknowledged the need for cooperation on key policy areas.
Responding to questions about law enforcement, Mamdani’s chief of staff clarified that the incoming administration will only collaborate with ICE and the Trump administration to target undocumented immigrants who commit serious crimes, rather than broad sweeps against all undocumented New Yorkers. This position aligns with Mamdani’s previous remarks that law enforcement should focus on dangerous offenders rather than blanket enforcement.
Meanwhile, Senator Amy Klobuchar, appearing on NBC, was unable to provide a specific example of any illegal military order issued by President Trump when pressed by moderators. Klobuchar’s exchange highlighted ongoing Democrat paranoia about Trump’s potential use of executive power, but underscored the lack of concrete evidence of such orders during his administration.
