In a wild video that has now gone viral, New Zealand reporter Jess Tyson took a direct hit from a rogue seagull right in the middle of reporting a news segment, leaving her with a bloody gash across her eyelid.
The incident unfolded last month while Tyson, a host on Whakaata Māori’s “Te Ao with Moana,” was reporting on the rise of “fast fashion” in New Zealand.
As the reporter focused on delivering her lines, a seagull came barreling out of nowhere and slammed into her face.
The impact left a nasty cut and blood streaming down her cheek.
Tyson shared the clip on Facebook and wrote, “We were filming for a story about the impact of fast fashion in New Zealand when a seagull flew onto my face. It’s beak or claws must have hit me because I was left with a scar above my left eye below my eyebrow – just missing my eyeball luckily. Afterwards the bird looked fine and rejoined their friends close by. I rushed to a nearby corporate office in downtown Auckland to clean up before continuing filming.”

Speaking to NBC’s “Today” show, Tyson said, “Before it happened, I was focusing so hard on trying to get my lines right so when the bird hit me it was such a huge shock!”
Tyson continued, “The impact itself was most surprising, like a heavy pillow being smacked onto my face. Then, the next minute, I started bleeding.”
After cleaning up the bleeding, Tyson continued the live hit.
“I didn’t have to continue, but I decided I wanted to because I wasn’t happy with my first takes,” Tyson added.
Tyson said that while she is fine now, the incident left a small scar.
“I am doing fine now and have a small scar to show the evidence and [a] hilarious story,” Tyson said.
