Psycho Grinch Goes Crazy in New York

“The voices in her head told her that she had to kill someone or else she would be killed.” That’s what Manhattan police were told after arresting the middle-aged, knife-wielding, recently released psych patient, Kerri Aherne.
Not exactly the type of holiday cheer shoppers are used to at the world’s most iconic Christmas Department store, but just a week ago, Aherne was released from Manhattan Psychiatric Center and went directly to the mid-town flagship Macy’s, purchased a knife at the store then purposefully strode to the women’s restroom with the singular purpose of killing someone. An unsuspecting tourist was changing her 10-month-old child’s diaper when Aherne attacked.
While the baby was unharmed, the tourist who was visiting New York City from the West Coast was rushed to Bellevue Hospital and was listed in stable condition. The perpetrator, Aherne, had a long history of mental health issues, including death threats to US Senator Elizabeth Warren and menacing social media posts about President Trump.
Aherne had just been released from Manhattan Psychiatric Center after a year long stint with a prescription for the antipsychotic drug, Prolixin, prescribed as a treatment for schizophrenia. Originally from Tewksbury, Massachusetts, Aherne had been declared an incapacitated person in 2019.
It is of interest that when ordered to be held without bond, Aherne protested pleading “I don’t want to go to another hospital.” Aherne explained to the court that her stay at Manhattan Psychiatric center did not help.
Of course, one would like to have a few more details about this psych patient’s life. For example, how many psychiatric drugs had Aherne been prescribed at Manhattan Psychiatric center before release? Being in a psych ward for an entire year suggests serious problems and lots of experimental “treatment.”
Also, what event occurred that led Aherne to be admitted into Manhattan Psychiatric center if she is from Massachusetts? The court reported that Aherne had been homeless, yet the Manhattan Psychiatric center released Aherne without any guarantee about a stable living arrangement for the psych patient?
Who was Aherne’s treating physician while a patient at Manhattan Psychiatric center? What led the treating physician to believe that Aherne was stable enough to be released into the public? Was the antipsychotic the only drug that Aherne had been prescribed and requested to take as “treatment” for her mental disorders. In fact, what mental disorders had Aherne been diagnosed with and what drugs had been utilized over the years as “treatment.”
It is no small issue to want to know Aherne’s drug “treatment” regimen. Afterall, too often, cocktails of prescription mind-altering drugs are prescribed for just one disorder. If Aherne had been diagnosed with several mental illnesses, there should be a record of the drugs prescribed. This is important information because each of the drugs have several possible adverse events associated with them and none of the experimental cocktails have ever been through clinical trials to determine efficacy.
Prolixin is a generic name for fluphenazine – an antipsychotic used primarily as a treatment for psychotic disorders like schizophrenia. And, given in oral forms, should be taken two or three times a day. It is reported to help control symptoms of delusions, hallucinations and hostility.
Clearly, if Aherne was hearing voices that told her to kill someone, the psychiatric drug “treatment” was not working. Worse, the drug actually could cause adverse events like confusion, restlessness, strange dreams, altered consciousness, impairment in judgement and mental skills, agitation, bizarre dreams, increased aggressiveness, aggravation of psychotic processes and catatonic and confused states.
It’s anyone’s guess whether it was the mental disorder or the drugs that caused Aherne to attack an innocent mother. But what is certain is that the public deserves to know the thought process of Aherne’s physicians’ decision to release, what can only be described as an extremely unstable women, onto the unsuspecting public. What in Aherne’s behavior made these mental health “experts” believe it was safe for the public for Aherne to be out on the street.
Until the court orders Aherne’s treating physicians to make public the psych patient’s mental health history and drug “treatment,” these random attacks will continue, and the unsuspecting public will remain in danger. Even at Macy’s not everyone has holly in their heart.
