House Speaker Mike Johnson was on “Fox News Sunday” with host Shannon Bream to discuss the partial government shutdown. Johnson also reminded viewers that the Democrats caused the longest government shutdown last fall, which lasted 43 days. He also talked about funding for Homeland Security and defended the right of ICE agents to wear masks and to not have personally identifiable information on their uniform in order to keep them safe.
“I know you didn’t want a partial shutdown for your birthday, but that’s where we are,” Bream said.
“After the 43-day shutdown last Fall the Democrats hoisted upon America, the longest in history, we tip our hat to all the appropriators in both parties. They got together. They were insistent to get all the appropriations bills done. There is supposed to be 12 every year. We did that, and because of their hard work, bipartisan, bicameral, we got that through the process, and now the Senate and the House have approved 11 of the 12 funding bills,” Johnson said.
“They modified it because they broke out the Department of Homeland Security bill in the last package, which sends it back to us,” Johnson continued.
“The Homeland Security bill will be separated. Two weeks of intense negotiations to try to figure this out,” Johnson said.
“What Brandon Gill said there, my House colleague, Republican, is right. We have to allow ICE to do its job. We have to allow Border Patrol to do its job,” Johnson continued.
“You could do it with a majority vote, but you got a really tight margin there, and some of your members on the Republican side are saying, we don’t want to vote for this,” Bream said.
“Remember, these bills that have already been passed. We are gonna do it again. It’s a formality at this point,” Johnson said.
“Are we gonna have another partial shutdown in two weeks?” Bream asked.
“I’ve got to get everybody in a room and work this out. I think we can,” Johnson said of avoiding another partial shutdown.
“Immigration enforcement should be balanced and fair and safe and all that,” Johnson said.
“The problem that you have in Minnesota is that you have the Governor and local leaders who have been basically inciting violence in some cases. They are encouraging citizens to impede federal law enforcement, and that sets up a dangerous, chaotic situation,” Johnson continued.
“There are some Democrats who don’t sound like they are not gonna move at all,” Bream said.
“They want masks off of these ICE agents. They want them wearing ID that tells exactly who they are,” Bream said of Democrats.
Speaker Johnson explained how dangerous it would be for ICE agents to have their names on their uniform or for them to be required to remove their masks. Agents are constantly being harassed and doxed, which makes it more dangerous for them to do their job.
“Those two things are conditions that would create further danger,” Johnson said.
“When you have people doxxing them and targeting them. Of course, we don’t want their personal identification out there on the streets,” Johnson continued.
