Eileen Gu during a press conference at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Eileen Gu, the U.S. born skier competing for China at the Winter Olympics, has said she is “skeptical” that China is really carrying out a genocide against their Uyghur minority.
Gu, who was raised in San Francisco but has chosen to represent the Chinese Olympic team, was asked in a profile by TIME magazine about the country’s well documented genocide against Uyghur Muslims.
“I’m not an expert on this,” said Gu, who is a student at Stanford University. “I haven’t done the research. I don’t think it’s my business. I’m not going to make big claims on my social media.”
When pressed about the issue, Gu said she remains a “skeptic” about the official data.
“I’m just more of a skeptic when it comes to data in general. So it’s not like I can read an article and be like, ‘Oh, well, this must be the truth.’
“I need to have a ton of evidence. I need to maybe go to the place, maybe talk to 10 primary-source people who are in a location and have experienced life there.”
“Then I need to go see images. I need to listen to recordings. I need to think about how history affects it. Then I need to read books on how politics affects it. This is a lifelong search.”
When Eileen Gu, American-born, American-raised Olympian, who defected to China, was asked about the Uyghur genocide in China she said:
“I’m not an expert on this… I don’t think it’s my business.”

The Uyghur genocide is a reality acknowledged by those on both sides of the political spectrum.
The situation is outlined in a report by Genocide Watch:
Since 2017, 800,000 to 2 million Uyghurs have been detained in mass detention centers where they undergo forced CCP indoctrination, physical abuse, sexual violence, and cultural erasure.
The Uyghur language is banned in these “reeducation camps.”
During indoctrination, detainees are coerced into abandoning Islam. The CCP has demolished many Uyghur mosques, severely restricting Uyghur religious freedom.
The Chinese government continues its campaign of Mass Detention in Reeducation Camps, where Uyghur Muslims face Forced Assimilation and Cultural Genocide through CCP indoctrination and Uyghur language bans.
Gu, meanwhile, appears unfazed. She continues to bask in the glow of her Olympic triumph while reaping tens of millions of dollars each year from a string of lucrative sponsorship deals.
