NYU Langone Health in Manhattan announced it will permanently ax its transgender treatment program for kids, not because it is against permanently disfiguring children, but because of the “current regulatory environment,” under the Trump Administration.
In January of 2025, President Trump issued an executive order, Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation, restricting ‘gender-affirming care’ across the country. The order applies to all individuals under 19.
The order impacts all federally-run insurance programs, including TRICARE for military families and Medicaid. Moreover, all federal funding for medical schools and hospitals will be revoked if they practice child mutilation.
The executive order reads in part, “It is the policy of the United States that it will not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support the so-called ‘transition’ of a child from one sex to another, and it will rigorously enforce all laws that prohibit or limit these destructive and life-altering procedures.”
“This dangerous trend will be a stain on our Nation’s history, and it must end,” the order adds.
A NYU Langone spokesman told The New York Post in a statement Wednesday, “Given the recent departure of our medical director, coupled with the current regulatory environment, we made the difficult decision to discontinue our Transgender Youth Health Program.”
“We are committed to helping patients in our care manage this change. This does not impact our pediatric mental health care programs, which will continue.”
In July 2025, the Department of Justice issued more than 20 subpoenas to doctors and clinics accused of performing gender-affirming procedures on minors.
The subpoenas span investigations into healthcare fraud, false statements, and even definitions of gender medicine as female genital mutilation (FGM).
This sweeping legal push stems directly from Attorney General Pam Bondi’s April memorandum, which declared that “gender ideology” has infiltrated American culture and the medical community, causing children to undergo irreversible procedures (puberty blockers, hormone therapy, surgeries) due to “junk science” and political capture by far-left activists.
According to the memo:
The DOJ will investigate and prosecute any gender-affirming surgery on minors as a potential violation of FGM laws under 18 U.S.C. § 116, which carries up to 10 years in prison per count.
DOJ will investigate drug companies and doctors for mislabeling or misbranding puberty blockers and hormones.
The DOJ will coordinate with state Attorneys General to prosecute hospitals and physicians under both federal and state laws banning gender transitions for minors.
Other hospitals have suspended or ended gender-transition practices, including the University of Michigan (UM) hospital system, and the largest health care system in western Massachusetts, Baystate Health.
The news comes on the heels of a landmark lawsuit filed by Fox Varian, a young woman who identified as a boy in her teens.
Fox was only a minor when she said doctors in New York convinced her to undergo a double mastectomy as part of her ‘transition.’
Varian was awarded $1.6 million for past and future pain and suffering, and an additional $400,000 for future medical expenses. Varian’s case is the first detransitioner malpractice lawsuit in the nation to go to trial and win.
