The blood-soaked reign of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ended, but for the family of Robert Levinson, the wounds inflicted by the Iranian regime remain wide open.
Robert Levinson was a retired FBI agent and the longest-held American hostage in history.
Initially described as a private investigator, a 2013 Associated Press investigation revealed he was actually on an “unauthorized mission” for the CIA to gather intelligence on Iranian officials.
He disappeared on March 9, 2007, from Kish Island, Iran, and was declared dead in absentia by his family and the U.S. government in March 2020.
For 19 years, the Levinson family says they have endured a relentless campaign of deception from Tehran.
For years, the mullahs in Tehran played a sadistic game of “cat and mouse.” They denied holding him, even as they leaked “proof of life” videos in 2010 and haunting photos in 2011 showing a gaunt, bearded Levinson chained in an orange jumpsuit. It was a brazen act of psychological warfare against an American family.
According to Rewards for Justice:
Rewards for Justice is offering a reward of up to $20 million for information leading to the location, recovery, and return of Robert A. “Bob” Levinson, as well as information leading to the identification, location, arrest, or conviction of any person responsible for his disappearance.
A retired FBI special agent, Levinson went missing during a business trip to Kish Island, Iran, on March 9, 2007. Levinson had retired from the FBI in 1998 and was working as a private investigator at the time of his disappearance.
Senior Iranian officials authorized Levinson’s abduction and detention and then launched a disinformation campaign to deflect blame from the Iranian regime. Mohammad Baseri and Ahmad Khazai, two senior officials of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) acting in their official capacity as MOIS officers, were allegedly involved in the abduction, detention, and probable death of Mr. Levinson.
In a powerful statement shared by Fox News Chief National Security Correspondent Jennifer Griffin, the Levinson family did not mince words.
They laid the blame for Bob’s kidnapping and probable death directly at the feet of the deceased dictator and the terrorist state he commanded.
“For nearly 19 years, Iran has lied, obstructed, and refused to answer for the kidnapping, detention, and death of our father, Robert Levinson. He was taken by Iranian officials in 2007, held for years without basic human rights, denied contact with his family, and never returned home.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led the regime responsible for these crimes. His death does not erase what Iran did to our father, and it does not end our fight for accountability. But it is a significant moment for our family and for every family that has suffered at the hands of this regime’s hostage-taking and wrongful detention.
We are grateful to President Trump and Secretary Rubio for using the power of the United States to confront Iran and to hold it accountable, including by recognizing and addressing Iran’s long-standing practice of wrongful detention.
At the same time, our hearts are with the Iranian people as they continue their struggle for freedom, dignity, and a future free from the repression of this regime.
Now Iran must do what it has refused to do for nearly two decades: provide full accountability for what happened to our father, return his remains to our family, and disclose the truth about his kidnapping, imprisonment, and death.
Our family will not stop demanding the truth. And we will not stop demanding justice.”
