Federal prosecutors are investigating Colombia’s Marxist President Gustavo Petro over his alleged ties to drug traffickers.
According to multiple media reports, the probes are being led by U.S. attorney’s offices in Manhattan and Brooklyn, with support from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Homeland Security Investigations.
Prosecutors are examining whether Petro met with traffickers and whether his presidential campaign received funding connected to illicit networks.
The investigations are ongoing and remain in early stages. It is unclear at what stages the investigations are at and whether charges will follow.

The development comes amid a strained relationship between Petro and President Trump.
Trump has repeatedly attacked Petro over his failure to cooperate with his crackdown on drug trafficking and suggested he needs to “watch his ass.”
Petro, meanwhile, has described the Trump administration as a “clan of pedophiles.”
“A clan of pedophiles wants to destroy our democracy,” he said back in December.
“To keep Epstein’s list from coming out, they send warships to kill fishermen and threaten our neighbor with invasion for their oil.”

The investigations into Petro follow broader actions targeting leaders and networks tied to narcotics activity in the region.
Petro has denied links to drug trafficking. However, allegations over secret ties have long surrounded his political movement.
Colombian prosecutors have said illicit money entered his 2022 campaign through intermediaries, including his son Nicolas Petro.
Relations between Washington and Bogotá have deteriorated at multiple points. Disputes have included deportation flights, sanctions, and U.S. military operations targeting drug routes.
Tensions escalated further after the successful U.S. military operation to capture Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro, a close political and idelogical ally of Petro’s.
However, tensions between the two leaders ease back in February following a meeting at the White House. The two leaders later described their discussions in positive terms, signaling a temporary thaw.

Petro is due to leave office later this year ahead of presidential elections in May.
In past cases, U.S. authorities have waited until foreign leaders are out of power before pursuing formal charges or extradition.
