Failing PM Starmer will be challenged on Monday by Catherine West- Wiki Commons
They’re coming for Starmer.
Less than two years into his premiership, Labour leader Keir Starmer is hanging to his office by a thread, going from scandal to crisis and back.
The earthquake caused by the release by the US DOJ of the ‘Jeffrey Epstein files’ very nearly cost Starmer his job, as former Ambassador to the US Peter Mandelson and former Prince Andrew were both arrested and indicted for ‘Misconduct in public office’.
But incredibly, the worst was still to come for Starmer and his Labour party, who got smashed in last week’s Local election: Labour lost 1,492 council seats, while Nigel Farage’s Reform UK gained 1,349 new seats.
Yesterday (9), Starmer was still trying to pull a Hail Mary move by bringing former PM Gordon Brown into his administration for a top spot.
But it’s unclear how effective this will be since the challenges to his premiership will start on Monday.
Starmer is facing a ‘stalking horse’ leadership challenge, in which ‘a Labour MP will move against him by Monday unless ministers acted first’.
A stalking horse is “a maneuver used to mount a challenge on behalf of a third party. If the idea proves viable and popular, the third party can then declare its interest and advance the concept with little risk of failure”.
Labour MP Catherine West said if a new leader isn’t put forward by *tomorrow*, then on Monday she will trigger a leadership election.
She knows she wont win, but clearly thinks she has the 81 names to start the process!!

The Telegraph reported:
“Catherine West, a former Labour junior minister, sent Downing Street into a panic on Saturday night after stating that unless any of the serious leadership candidates intervened by Monday, she would act.
It came as the fallout from Labour’s disastrous local election results gained pace, with 39 Labour MPs publicly calling on Sir Keir to go by Saturday evening after the party lost 1,492 seats.”

“One serving government minister told The Telegraph that Ms West was likely to reach the 81 MPs required to trigger a leadership contest. [They] said Labour MPs and voters were ‘angry’ and wanted Sir Keir Starmer to ‘grow a backbone’.
A government source said: “You can sense the Cabinet is coming to the end of its tether,” adding that support for the Prime Minister was now much less pronounced than it was earlier in the year.”
