A completely avoidable incident struck a Texas high school just hours after a massive sporting victory last weekend.
As People Magazine reported, police arrested and charged 18-year-old Xavier Mayfield with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The incident occurred at roughly 9:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, Dec. 20, in Dallas.
Mayfield is a player for the high school powerhouse Dallas South Oak Cliff. Earlier in the day, Dallas South Oak Cliff won the Conference 5A Division II state championship on Saturday by defeating Richmond Randle of Fort Bend County 35-19.
The Golden Bears appeared in the title game for the fifth straight season.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by FOX 4 News, Mayfield was in a bedroom with his victim and another teammate when he carried out his alleged act of violence.
Mayfield’s other teammate explained to the police that the three were “reviewing photos that were taken of a football game that had occurred early in the day.”
Just as he walked out of the room, the witness stated that he saw Mayfield “swinging the rifle that was used in the offense.” Mayfield claimed the safety of the gun was on.
But the witness said that he later heard a single gunshot. Mayfield also admitted to the shooting but insisted it was an accident.
According to police, Mayfield claimed that he “turned around towards where [the victim] was at and stated right after he turned around, a single gunshot went off from the AR15 ABC Rifle that [he] was holding.”
The Next Generation Action Network, a civil rights organization based in South Dallas, echoed Mayfield’s claim that the shooting was an accident.
Dallas ISD has not yet commented on the shooting or Mayfield’s arrest.
Mayfield also stated he tried to take his injured teammate to the hospital, but instead called 911 due to the amount of blood.
People Magazine reported that the victim is in stable condition at the hospital.
People Magazine obtained records showing that Mayfield was being held on a $50,000 bond in the Dallas County Jail.
He has since been released.
