Married Democrat Rep. Jimmy Gomez, a longtime friend and political ally of disgraced former Rep. Eric Swalwell, was reportedly seen kissing a much younger congressional aide outside a private backyard party hosted by Swalwell in the summer of 2023.
According to multiple sources who spoke to the New York Post, the alleged incident occurred down the street from Swalwell’s home near the Capitol as guests were leaving the gathering, which marked the start of the August 2023 congressional recess.
The aide, who worked for a different House Democrat and is more than two decades younger than the 51-year-old Gomez, was reportedly sitting on the hood of a car when the two were seen “going at it,” one witness told the Post.
“A few of us were getting out of the event and saw them, for lack of better words, making out … It was outside behind some cars,” the source said.
“They were down the street a little bit. But it wasn’t that discreet.”
Another source said the encounter was visible to several people leaving the event.
A spokesperson for the congressman denied the allegations outright, telling the New York Post the reported makeout session “did not happen” and calling the accounts “not true.”
The woman involved declined to comment when contacted by the outlet.
A third source briefed on the matter said he had heard the story from three or four other Democrats who claimed to have witnessed it firsthand.
Gomez was part of Swalwell’s informal social circle, often referred to as the “Cool Kids Clique,” which also included Ruben Gallego. The group was known for frequent socializing and drinking together in Washington.
Swalwell resigned from Congress last week and suspended his campaign for California governor after multiple women came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct ranging from harassment to rape.
At least five women have accused Swalwell of wrongdoing.
One former staffer told the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN that Swalwell sexually assaulted her twice while she was too intoxicated to consent.
Swalwell has denied all of the allegations, calling them false, and his attorney has said he denies “each and every” claim.
Gomez quickly distanced himself from Swalwell once the allegations became public. He resigned as co-chair of Swalwell’s gubernatorial campaign, describing the reports as “shocking” and “the ugliest and most serious accusations imaginable.”
Congressional ethics rules generally do not prohibit consensual relationships between members of Congress and staffers they do not directly supervise, but one source familiar with the environment on Capitol Hill told the Post that “this behavior of open philandering by married male members of Congress is pervasive and long overdue to be addressed,” adding that it creates “a culture of abuse.”
“Regardless [of whether] it is a staff member of their own or another congressman, there is a massive power dynamic that fosters a culture of abuse. You have these married male congressmen openly cheating on their wives with female staffers — how is that not grounds for expulsion?”
Texas Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales resigned on the same day as Swalwell rather than face an expulsion vote over an affair with a district staffer who later died by suicide.
Florida Republican Rep. Cory Mills is currently under an ethics investigation over an alleged affair with a 27-year-old political organizer.
No statements or press releases have been issued by Rep. Gomez or his office since the New York Post story was published on Saturday.
The woman at the center of the allegation has not spoken publicly.
