It’s like a game of heads and tails, with ‘War’ written on one side and ‘Peace’ written on the other.
On Friday, two apparently conflicting statements came from the Russian camp about the war in Ukraine and the prospects for peace.
First, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said that a peace Agreement between Moscow and Kiev ‘is a long way off’.
But just a few hours later, President Vladimir Putin told the press that he believes ‘the war is coming to an end’.
How can that be? If you follow the MSM, they’ll assure you that either insubordination by Peskov or utter confusion in the Russian Government.
But there’s a simpler explanation: the Russian demands to end the war are various – denazification and demilitarization of Ukrainian society, protection for the Russian minority and language, acceptance by Kiev that they will not join NATO…
These are really far away from completion.
But there are also the territorial demands, and in this case, however underwhelming the Russian offensive has been in 2026, the Russian forces are actually close to completing the task.
Once Moscow conquers the northern Donetsk bastion of the Kramatorsk-Sloviansk fortified belt and the surrounding regions, it will be game over. Game, set, and match for Russia.

Reuters reported:
“The Kremlin on Saturday said that the United States was in a hurry to clinch a peace deal to end the Ukraine war but that getting to any sort of agreement was a very long way off because the issues were so complicated and talks were basically on hold.
[…] ‘It is understandable that the American side is in a hurry’, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told state television reporter Pavel Zarubin.
‘But the issue of a Ukrainian settlement is far too complex, and reaching a peace agreement is a very long way with complex details’, Peskov said.”

In another report by Reuters, we learn that Putin said he thought the Ukraine war was coming to an end.
“’I think that the matter is coming to an end’, Putin told reporters of the Russia-Ukraine war, Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War Two. He also said he would be willing to negotiate new security arrangements for Europe, and that his preferred negotiating partner would be Germany’s former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.
Putin was speaking in the Kremlin after setting out his view of the causes of the war. He blamed ‘globalist’ Western leaders, saying they promised NATO would not expand eastward after the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall, but then tried to draw Ukraine into the European Union’s orbit.”
