JD Vance debates Tim Walz
Vice President JD Vance on Monday announced that he is referring Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison to the Department of Justice’s anti-fraud division for a criminal investigation after allegations that they allowed billions of dollars in fraud.
Vance discussed the referral in an interview with Fox’s Jesse Watters, calling for a “full criminal investigation,” adding, “You had people in Governor Walz’s office who were saying, ‘You know what? This looks like fraud. It looks like these Somali illegal immigrants are doing something that’s very shady.’”
“And then you had people who shut them down, who shut these whistleblowers down and said, you know, ‘You’re a racist’ or ‘You’re a xenophobe’ for asking questions about where taxpayer money is going,” Vance added. “People weren’t taking fraud seriously,” Vance continued, vowing that people will be prosecuted over this.

This comes after the House Oversight Committee released a 205-page report, alleging that senior officials in the Walz administration and Ellison’s office were aware of credible fraud concerns across Minnesota as early as 2019 within the Minnesota Department of Human Services and by 2020 within the Minnesota Department of Education.
Under their wilful negligence, billions of dollars have been stolen in various Medicaid, COVID-relief, and other federal welfare fraud rings. Notably, at least 79 defendants were federally charged in the $250 million Feeding Our Future COVID fraud scheme, which Walz and Ellison allowed to operate in their state as they seemingly received kickbacks.
The Oversight Committee’s report further claims:
Senior officials in Walz’s office and Ellison’s office were aware of credible, systemic fraud in DHS programs as early as 2019 and in the Department of Education’s child nutrition programs by April 2020.
In the Feeding Our Future case, MDE officials identified serious deficiencies yet voluntarily continued payments for another eight months until the FBI finally raided. This was NOT required by any court order.
State agencies had clear authority to suspend or stop payments to suspected fraudsters without waiting for courts, FBI direction, or federal orders — but they refused to use it.
Officials repeatedly cited litigation threats and fear of racism accusations as the real reason they kept cutting checks. Not law. Not regulations. Politics.
The report further details how employees who attempted to sound the alarm faced retaliation, including intimidation through regular high-level check-ins, threats of surveillance, and other efforts to keep whistleblowers quiet.
Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) previously grilled Tim Walz on these retaliation tactics during a March Oversight Committee Hearing, where he denied having any knowledge of the tactics but did admit responsibility for the massive defrauding of tax dollars. Oversight Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) further decimated Walz, questioning him on evidence that he and Attorney General Keith Ellison knew about Somali fraud rings but suppressed it because the Somali community is such a large voting bloc in the state.
Vance described the report’s assertions as “shocking allegations about the failure of senior officials in the Minnesota government to address widespread fraud in federally funded social services programs in the state” in a letter to Assistant Attorney General for the National Fraud Enforcement Division Colin McDonald, calling on him to “immediately investigate.”
“Who within the offices of Governor Walz and Attorney General Ellison was aware of the systemic fraud concerns? Did they share these concerns with Governor Walz and Attorney General Ellison? Did Governor Walz lie in public statements suggesting that his office was unaware of the massive fraud in Minnesota? Did Governor Walz’s Administration retaliate against and intimidate whistleblowers who tried to sound the alarm about this theft of taxpayer dollars? Were Walz Administration officials aware that some of the fraudulently obtained funds may have been sent to foreign terrorist networks? And, most importantly, do the actions and failures to act alleged in the Committee’s report constitute violations of federal criminal or civil law?” Vance wrote.
“If state officials in Minnesota or anywhere else in the country facilitated fraud or looked the other way while this theft was happening, if they actively prevented state and federal officials from stopping fraud and bringing fraudsters to justice, or if they intimidated and harassed whistleblowers who courageously tried to shine a light on this problem, they must be held accountable,” Vance added.
Vance shared a copy of the letter on X, writing, “I’ve referred these allegations to DOJ’s new Fraud Division for criminal investigation. Minnesota state officials are not above the law, and if they facilitated fraud, lied under oath about what they knew, or harassed and intimated whistleblowers, they must face justice.”
