President Donald Trump has declared that the entire 2020 presidential election should be “permanently wiped from the books” if the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is ultimately convicted of the sweeping federal fraud charges filed against it earlier this week.
Calling the SPLC “one of the greatest political scams in American history,” Trump linked the organization’s alleged scheme directly to the 2020 race.
In a post to Truth Social on Friday, the president wrote:
The Southern Poverty Law Center, one of the greatest political scams in American History, has been charged with FRAUD. This is another Democrat Hoax, along with Act Blue, and many others. If it is true, the 2020 Presidential Election should be permanently wiped from the books and be of no further force or effect! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DJT
On Tuesday, a federal grand jury in Montgomery, Alabama, returned an 11-count indictment charging the SPLC with wire fraud, false statements to a federally insured bank, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
According to the Department of Justice, between 2014 and 2023, the SPLC secretly funneled more than $3 million in donated funds to individuals associated with violent extremist groups, including the Ku Klux Klan, Aryan Nations, National Socialist Movement, United Klans of America, and the National Alliance.
Prosecutors allege the SPLC paid these informants and insiders to generate and stoke the very extremism the organization publicly claimed to be fighting, all to scare donors into giving more money.
The indictment highlights one particularly damning example, in which a leader of the 2017 Unite the Right protest in Charlottesville allegedly received more than $270,000 over eight years through shell organizations funded by the SPLC.
Prosecutors say an SPLC-paid informant helped coordinate transportation for attendees to the rally, which Biden later used as a key campaign point. He repeatedly cited it as the moment that convinced him to run for president, falsely claiming Trump had referred to “neo-Nazis” as “very fine people.”
“The SPLC is manufacturing racism to justify its existence,” said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. “Using donor money to allegedly profit off Klansmen cannot go unchecked. This Department of Justice will hold the SPLC and every other fraudulent organization operating with the same deceptive playbook accountable. No entity is above the law.”
The DOJ stated that a conviction “will result in the forfeiture of financial gains from the alleged illegal activities.”
SPLC chief officer Bryan Fair has claimed the organization was being “politically targeted” for its past use of paid confidential informants to gather intelligence on violent groups.
However, the DOJ and FBI Director Kash Patel, who previously severed the bureau’s relationship with the SPLC, calling it a “partisan smear machine,” explained that the charges are about fraud against donors, not political speech.
